How long will the government sit by and allow our children to be raped? How many of our children must be murdered and molested before Perry Christie wakes up? How many more lives have to be destroyed before this government sees the need to act? Last Friday was another awake up call for us as a people. It’s also a demonstration of the failure of the Christie administration to effectively address our growing crime problem. The BDM echoes its call for the resignation of the Minister of National Security because she is incapable of handling our crime problem.
It is apparent that the Prime Minister does not understand the urgency and the magnitude of the vexing problem. Crime is destroying our country while our government leaders’ sits back and do nothing. The past two administrations have failed our country because they didn’t address the insurgence of violent crimes. Under the FNM administration crime was prevalent and now under the New PLP nothing has change. Perry Christie is too soft on crime.
The BDM condemns the PLP for their lack of action in regards to crime. In 2005 the BDM lashed out at the Minister of National Security and the Permanent Secretary for their inept leadership in regards to crime. The Minister responded by saying that her Ministry will bring tougher legislation to deal with our crime problem; to date nothing was put forth, nothing was said and nothing was done.
As a matter of fact crime has not improved in 2005 so far figures show that there were 100 reported cases of physical abuse, 22 cases of incest. In 2006 here were 67 reported cases of physical abuse, nine cases of incest. How long will we sit back and allow our children lives to be destroyed?
The Bahamian people are tired of talk, we demand ACTION and we demanded it now. The BDM is demanding that the government mount an aggressive effort to combat violent crime because the future of our country and the future of our tourism industry depend on a safe Bahamas, not only for its citizens, but also for its visitors.
The BDM is demanding that we put in place a program to track sexual offenders. The Sex Offender Registration Act should be table before the end of this Parliamentary session which will require all sexual predators must be registered before they are released from prison. A sexual offenders division needs to be established within the Ministry of Social Services. This division will be required to maintain a file of individuals who have committee sexual crimes.
The sex offender's name, all aliases used, date of birth, sex, race, height, weight, eye color, driver's license number, home address and/or expected place of domicile, photograph and set of fingerprints, any internet accounts belonging to such offender and any internet screen names used by such offender should all be made available for public assess.
The first responsibility of a government is law and order; and BDM, demands that the present ACT be amended to ensure tougher penalties for all sexual offenders. A mandatory sentencing for raping a child needs to be live imprisonment and or Castration.
Last year the BDM made a call for castration to be enacted into our laws, today we are echoing our call again, Castrate these sick sadistic rapist. Today, castration is widely used throughout the world and the United States. As Of October 11, 1997, 5 States have enacted Castration Laws these states include: California, Georgia, Texas, Montana and Florida. We must begin to show criminals that we are serious and that we will not tolerate these hideous crimes to go unpunished. We must send a strong message that we will not stand for nor allow criminal to run free in our society.
The death penalty needs to be enforced for individuals convicted of murder and sentence to death. The BDM insists that we also seek to introduce mandatory penalties of 10 years in prison for any individuals caught with illegal FIREARM and an additional 5 years for every bullet found in the guns chamber.
Many people, largely supporters of both the inept FNM and PLP, have buried their heads in the sand for too long and refused to admit the stark, glaring truth that crime has flourished under both the PLP and the FNM Government.
But we know the truth; and so, we begin our campaign to remove the PLP from power just as we did the FNM. We condemn this government for all those victims, especially our beloved women and children who have been abused, and also those young men and women who have died needlessly in this country in recent times. We stand in solidarity with the bereaved, with the husbandless wives, with the fatherless children, with the grieving mothers. And we shall not stop, we shall not rest, we shall not lay down our weapons of political warfare, until the PLP is gone forever and a caring BDM Government is in power.
