Education

In a recent statement made by the former leader of the Free National Movement, Mr. Turnquest said “Our Schools are failing, and the government refused to make firm decisions about standards for achievement” It is apparent from this statement that Mr. Turnquest is suffering from server amnesia, it was just a few short years ago when his governemnt lead by the Rt. Hon. Hubert Ingraham was in power and did nothing to improve the educational standards in our country.

In fact, under the Ingraham administration the overall education standard dropped severely to a D.  Also, under the Ingraham administration, the country suffered the same problems in education as it’s doing today. Teachers complained about unhealthy working conditions, schools were not ready at the beginning of the schools year. In addition, teachers did not have adequate supplies to preform their duties and over their ten years of governance our schools remained in a state of disrepair.

How can Mr. Ingraham or Mr. Turnquest say anything thing about our educational system? Mr. Ingraham’s administration is a clear failure when it comes to education. To prove my point, the former Minister of Education under the FNM government Mr. Dion Foulks appeared on the Darrol Miller show in recent time and said, “He is proud that under his leadership as Minister, our country national average was a D.” How could a former Minster make a statement like that? Is he insane?

Now, the former Leader of the FNM is making claims that they will fix our education system. Why couldn’t they have fixed the education system in the ten years they were in government? Mr. Turnquest goes on to say “The future of our country rest on the proper education of our youth and school campus and the supplies and the resources must reflect the priority in which we hold education.”  If this statement is true, then it is apparent that the FNM did not consider education a major priority, since under their leadership our education system suffered many deficiencies. Does the FNM think the Bahamian people are that slow? Or was their failure in education a deliberate attempt to keep the Bahamian people uneducated in order for them to continuously pull the wool over their eyes? The FNM is selling and empty bill of goods in their promise to fix our educational system. On the other hand, the PLP isn’t selling anything because they don’t have anything to sell. They are both clueless and visionless.

Under the new Minister Mr. Alfred Sares our educational system is in further disarray. We have now successfully sunk to an E average. This is an indictment and a crying shame on our government. The repercussion of our failure to properly educate or people will be that in 15 years, the Bahamas will become another Haiti; an uneducated, unproductive and a chaotic society.

In the last thirteen years, and two administrations later, our educational system has gotten worst rather than better. It is safe to conclude that both the PLP and the FNM are major failures. The same problems that afflicted the FNM in education are the PLP’s worst nightmare. The question is when will we get it right? From all indications neither Mr. Ingraham nor Mr. Christie has the answers. These two men must be judge based on their performance record not their political follishness and the hand writing is clearly on the wall, they both have failed.

The time has now come for us to put and end to the PLP and FNM reign of destruction. Our country is more important than any one individual. Both the FNM and the PLP have and are only producing a generation of illiterate Bahamians. The Bahamian must now wake up and see that our country is in desperate need of a change, away from both the major parties. It cannot be business as usual we need to do something new.
